Summary:
After Google threats to shut down Google.cn and their offices in China, the Chinese government shows their attitude to the world------no compromise, to “guarantee internet security”. In 1999, Google was launched in China. At that time, its corporate mantras was: “Don’t Be Evil”. Since then, it has been dealing with issues about the internet censorship as required by China. “In 2006, Google blocked some certain websites in return for being able to run a local Chinese service.”
Somebody say that “ the ending of the self-imposed censorship of its Chinese search service marks a reversal of one of Google’s most controversial decisions.” However that means we lose the second search engine and Google loses one third of the whole Chinese market.
Own views:
Even though I feel quite pity about this, but I believe this decision is made by considerable consideration. As we know, the Chinese government has been censoring information that will do harm to harmony of the society. It blocked Google , Youtube and some other websites for several times. And Chinese regulators criticise Google for making pornography available through its search engine. Google feels quite restricted in China and can hardly make big profits. On the other hand, China has been worrying about the news on Google. For example, “Tiananmen”, the Beijing square that was the site of the 1989 crackdown on student protesters as well as other historical events, was at the top on Wednesday of Google.cn’s. To tell the truth the fact is never exposed to the public in China , and the information on the website was not 100% true.
So maybe this is a favorable choice for both sides. And this event “underscores the lengths governments will go to to really close the internet.”
Users may feel a little inconvenient , but it doesn’t matter. We still have Baidu ,Yahoo and many other search engine, and we will also looking for Google’ s performance in the whole world!

I also think this is a good choice for both sides:Google and Chinese government.Google will still obey its value "Don't be evil" and China almost has no loss with Baidu and Yahoo. But there's one saying that perhaps Yahoo is also going to leave. If that is true and many companies follow Google,I think it will be a great loss for China.
ReplyDeleteOn the day when it joined WTO and exposed to the whole world, china should weigh pros and cons. This situation will arrive sooner or later that the hidden Chinese history or truth will be unveiled. However, as china has gone through so many difficulties together with Chinese people in 2008, the government should set its mind at rest about the riots. That is not a suitable excuse for Chinese government.
ReplyDeleteAnd as for Google, it has been in china for 10 years! It is not the first time it enters china’s market. There is no reason for it misunderstanding the hidden rules dominated by the government in china, like the so-called freedom restrictions. Beside, being a well-known IT company, it is not a good excuse to quit china because of hacker attacks. This will only cause doubt from the public whether google is able to protect clients’ information. By the way, baidu is also attacked.
For now, no one knows the exact and key reason why Google is willing to give up this huge cake in china. But one thing is for sure. Profits Google earned in china are not as considerable as we imagine. The conflicts in economy between china government and Google may become bigger. From this, maybe we can deduce a wild assumption that the shadow of economic recession hasn’t gone. Otherwise, why does Google protest now rather than 2 years ago considering that it has been in china for 10 years?

ReplyDeleteI am not clear whether Google really wants to leave China only because of the cyberattacks or the strict censroship. I think there must be something else that Google is not convenient to tell. China has a very big market which is increasing very fast. Losing China's market would be a great loss to any corporation. On the other hand, Internet becomes a insperate part of people's life. Any country losses the most advanced technology or the free news and knowledge would also be a disaster. One is the most developing country, and the other is representing the most developed technology, who will win? Actually i think they can have a win-win situation. According to Chinese law, any company should obey the law and should be under strict censorship if the company wants to develop in China. But Google believes in "Don't be evil", that's a contradiction. But under more discussion, i think they can have an agreement.
There is another thing when taking about Google.cn, that is his competitor,Baidu. I do not think it's very urgent or necessary for Google.cn to catch up with Baidu. But what Google needs to do is to adjust the Chinese business environment, though it has done a lot on this aspect. And it should also analyse the behavior of the Chinese people, knowing their habits when using Internet, which is a good way to make progress.
That's my opinon on the issue, hope Google will go further in China. "Best wishes"
